Not only historically instructional, the stamps of Europe also reflect local culture, both in their design and in the people, places, and events honored. A given country, in a specific era, may use mostly emblematic coats of arms and state seals for its stamp designs, reflecting a strong nationalism; another country may choose colorful representations of local dance and musical instruments, honoring the country's arts (and by extension, individuality); still another may pay tribute to friendly alliances with other nations, by depicting treaties, trade agreements, or other examples of political cooperation.
Different languages can make European stamp collecting fun for linguistic enthusiasts, where others may try to collect one stamp from each type of currency that has appeared on a stamp at least once. A collector may search for stamps from a certain country, or printed in a certain color, or any of a myriad of possibilities. There is no wrong theme for any collection, nor do you have to have a good "reason" to buy any stamp — if you like it, want it and can afford it, go for it!
