Hungarian 2008 ethnic minority stamp: Roma
This is the first in a new series for Hungary’s stamps: a recognition of the ethnic minorities found in the country.

This first one honors the Roma people, a group that has been traced back to Indian origins and which exists in a wide area of eastern and southern Europe. Emphasizing Romany music and dance, the design features a kind of montage: a colorful Roma dancer dominates the stamp; beside her, two hands play a cimbalom in a closeup shot. (The cimbalom is a type of dulcimer known throughout eastern Europe, which incidentally featured as Gollum’s theme music in Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.)

Behind these two foreground images is a black and white picture of a group of musicians. The value of the stamp is HUF 260. The legend in Hungarian is “Magyarországi kisebbségek - Romák” (”Hungarian minorities - Roma”).
