European Stamp Prices & News

The Royal Mail has announced an addition to its already-planned postage stamp schedule for 2009: a stamp honoring Lewis Hamilton, the recent and youngest-ever winner of the international Formula One.

This has served to further anger many in Britain who have long lobbied the Royal Mail to honor soldiers killed and wounded in Iraq, appeals which have fallen on deaf ears so far. How, they ask, can the long-understood rule of not honoring celebrities and other notable people with a stamp while they are still living be so casually (and repeatedly) broken, but honoring the country’s actual combat heroes still proves unattractive?

Perhaps the answer is political, given the extremely polarizing issue of the war in Iraq. An unsatisfying answer, of course, but for now the UK will see Hamilton on a stamp but not an honor of its war dead.
